The floor of poultry houses are often covered with bedding material such as straw or wooden shavings since these materials allow the wastes to be contained till the poultry houses are cleaned up and these materials often prevent an odor from building up inside the poultry houses. At times newspaper or waste paper is used as bedding inside small poultry houses with only a few chickens. People who keep show chickens often use expensive bedding such as aspen wood shavings or absorbent paper to prevent their show chickens from looking dirty or smelling bad.

Backyard poultry houses are much smaller than commercial poultry houses and backyard poultry houses can either be made or readymade poultry houses can be purchased. A fence made of wood or wired mesh is usually used to cover the sides of the poultry house in order to prevent the chickens from straying away or to prevent wild animals to come inside the poultry houses. Special commercial poultry houses are designed for housing chickens and other birds in the urban area and these poultry houses help prevent wastage of space.
