Chicken Coop Building

Have you grown up owning chickens?   If so then you have probably been exposed to chicken coop building. Are you new to raising chickens? If you are a new chicken owner then one of things you will need to do is to learn about chicken coop building. Whether you are an experienced chicken owner or new chicken owner, keeping your chickens safe and creating an environment that is clean and sanitary for your chickens to thrive in is a priority.

A chicken coop is a place for your chickens to rest, sleep, and lay their eggs. It is also a place for you to collect the eggs your chicken has provided. Fresh eggs are a treat for any chicken owner and in order to enjoy those eggs your chickens need to be safe, clean and healthy.

They need to be protected against predators and all types of weather situations, such as rain, snow, heat and wind. Therefore chicken coop building is an important part of owning chickens.

Chicken coop building is easy, but care must be taken to provide all the necessities of a chicken’s life. Chickens not only need a protective shelter, but they need a place to be outside.   As part of chicken coop building you need to supply a chicken run, which is the chicken’s outdoor living area.    The chicken run is where the chicken eats, drinks and socializes.

Chickens also need plenty of fresh water, circulating air and plenty of light.   With chicken coop building these life necessities must be considered in your design and plans.   Many people add automatic watering mechanisms which pump fresh water into the chicken runs so their chickens have access to fresh water at all times.   Most people also include windows, vents or fans on the chicken coops to keep fresh air flowing and a direct light source.

As with any building project, chicken coop building needs to be planned in order to properly prepare the space requirements and building supplies needed for your project.   Determining how much space your chickens will need can be easily determined by basing your figures on the needs of eight chickens.   For every eight chickens you have you will need four to five square feet of space per chicken.   For every eight chickens you will also need at least three nests.   The chickens will share their nests with each other.   The most important thing is to make sure each chicken has at least nine inches of perch space.

Building supplies for chicken coop building will include various sizes of lumber, siding, roofing, fencing, wire, fasteners, water piping and cement. You would start out framing the chicken coop, adding the siding and roofing.   Then you will build the fencing or wire around the chicken coop to create the chicken run. Lumber or metal poles can be used to hold up the fencing material of your choice, but either should be securely anchored into the ground by placing the poles in hole and cement poured in the hole to secure the poles.   Once the cement dries and the poles are sure in the ground, the fencing material can be installed.   If an automatic watering mechanism will be used, then water piping is then installed to reach the chicken run.

Chicken coop building can be a rewarding experience, especially once you have happy, productive chickens living in the coop you built for them.
